Buying a Refurbished Laptop

If you want to get a cheap laptop, it is a good idea to purchase a refurbished one. Many people don’t know, but the majority of the refurbished laptops work even better than the new ones because of the intensive testing they go through. Buying a refurbished notebook can save you hundreds of dollars.

These are usually laptops that have been returned by customers. In most of the cases, they are returned for no reason. (they don’t like it, they don’t want to have it.) Sometimes they are returned because of hardware issues. In this case, the manufacturer replaces the problematic parts with new ones, fixes all the other issues and puts the laptop through intensive testing. If they pass all the tests, they are ready to be sold. Since they are not brand new anymore, he can not sell them as new laptops, only as refurbished or reconditioned ones. That also means that these refurbished notebooks can not be sold for the same price. Since they are pre-owned, the price automatically drops by up to 30%. On a thousand dollar machine, that means saving three hundred dollars.

So if you are considering buying a new laptop, go with the refurbished ones. They are usually in great condition, sometimes even unused. (especially the newer models). Sometimes they even come with the manufacturers warranty, giving you peace of mind, no matter what happens to your refurbished notebook.

When you want to get a refurbished laptop you have to do a little research. Go visit websites with extensive reviews of notebook computers. Decide which one you like the most and go look for the model on the Web. You will see right away how much the retail prices are for the new ones. Then look around for a reliable refurbished laptop wholesaler. Compare their prices to the new ones’ and see for yourself how much money you can really save.

At USAnotebook.com we offer the largest variety of excellent refurbished laptops and cheap used notebooks. We provide 6 months of warranty on all of our computers. If you want to save a few hundred dollars, and still be able to enjoy the same new technology, get a great deal on any of our professionally refurbished laptop computers.

Refurbished Laptops and Laptop bags

After purchasing your refurbished laptop, you probably start thinking how you are going to carry it around. There are millions of options to consider. From style to material and color you have a great range of options to get the laptop bag of your taste. You can also choose from bags with padding, with different pockets for phones and accessories. The prices for a laptop bag can vary from a low fair price to the craziest amount of money.

First of all you have to decide how you want to carry your laptop. Do you want it on your back, in a nice backpack? Would you want to lug it around on your shoulder? Or you want to carry it messenger style, around your head? There are also health issues to consider, not to mention your physique. If you are a smaller built person, and maybe you have a heavier refurbished laptop, you might want to consider a backpack rather than a heavy messenger bag that can put uncomfortable pressure on your neck. A shoulder bag weighing down one shoulder all the time can also be bad for your back, hips and neck.

After selecting your style, you can actually start looking for one. You can look on your favorite search engines: Google, Yahoo, Msn or any other that you prefer for Laptop Bags and other keywords. You will find different retailers with many different kinds of options. Make sure you know the dimensions of your laptop. If you do not, than don’t be afraid to get the old measuring tape and to write down the numbers. Better to make sure, than to receive a pretty laptop bag that your refurbished notebook can’t fit in. If you want you can also look around what the local retailers have to offer, even bringing your laptop along to make sure you make the right choice. Choose the right one. Make sure you are comfortable with the material and the color. You might not want to show up at the office with the most fun-looking and colorful laptop bag wrapped around your suit. Select the one that has enough storage space and pockets for accessories and padding for protection.

If you’ve already spent hundreds of dollars on a refurbished notebook, you might not want to spend a few hundred more on a laptop bag. If you want to save some money, you can always find good deals on laptop bags on http://ebay.com/ and other auction sites. But here at USAnotebook.com we offer great quality laptop bags for the cheapest available prices. You can get beautiful carrying cases for $20 dollars, and if you are purchasing at least ten computers we will include the carrying cases for free.

Refurbished Laptops and Windows Vista

Laptop sales have increased the last year. Some say it is because of Microsoft’s new platform the Windows Vista. When it came out, people welcomed it with mixed feelings. Some fell in love with the new, easy-to-use, user friendly platform right away, but some people criticized it for its high system requirements, high price, lack of drivers and for the bugs and flaws found within the new design. There is some truth in both opinions. The user friendly Vista is easy to navigate and manage. It offers an aesthetic design, somewhat similar to the Mac OS. But as it was with the XP, that took Microsoft over three years to get mostly bug free, this new platform has its bugs and flaws as well. Since it requires powerful system performance, you start to wonder: Is Windows Vista really a good choice of operating system for a laptop?

The new laptops are already designed for Windows Vista. They come with features and functions that were engineered for the new platform. They possess powerful computing resources which allow the Vista to run smoothly, even with high performance settings.
The only setback is the battery life. The Vista’s high demand of processing power and memory usage brings with it elevated battery use as well. It will not be a problem, if you are near a power source, but when you are on the road, you might want to set your performance settings and display brightness lower to enjoy a longer battery life.

But what about the older models? Is it convenient to install Vista on older, refurbished and used laptops? Check the system requirements on Microsoft’s website. If your laptop’s performance is capable of handling the Vista, you can give it a shot. However the system settings that Microsoft recommends for running the OS do not provide enough performance to run it completely smoothly. It might not be worth it. If your computer is having trouble performing under the Vista, or it’s not even capable of running it, I recommend you to stick with the XP. It is still trusted and useful, and with extended Microsoft support until 2014, it is a reliable operating system platform that won’t eat up all your resources.

Even those refurbished laptop owners, whose machines are not capable of running the new OS, do not have to worry. Although the power-demanding Vista offers some extra features and pretty design, they will always have reliable, fast running Operating System alternatives that match their laptops’ performance.

The History of the Computer Virus

The first virus was one called the Creeper. It was detected on ARPANET, the predecessor of the Internet back in the early 70’s. It spread via the TENEX operating system, using the modem connection to call out to other computers and infect them. Then it would display a message: "I'M THE CREEPER: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN" A program was created to fight the Creeper. It was called the Reaper. It is rumored it was developed by the same person who created the virus itself.

The first virus to infect a computer outside a network, or the place it was created, was the Elk Cloner. It was developed in 1982 by Rich Skrenta, a 15-year old high school student.
During a winter break from Mt Lebanon High School in Pennsylvania,US, he figured out how to send messages automatically on his Apple II machine. The first boot sector virus was created by him, infecting high school friends’ and local computer clubs’ machines. The infected machines would display a little poem on every 50th boot, but otherwise were caused no harm. The poem goes like:

Elk Cloner: The program with a personality
It will get on all your disks
It will infiltrate your chips
Yes it's Cloner!
It will stick to you like glue
It will modify RAM too
Send in the Cloner!

The first virus for PC was one called “Brain”. It was developed by two brothers Amjad Farooq and Basit Alvi in Lahore, Pakistan, back in 1986. It was a boot sector virus and they used it to deter pirated software that they created. Later analysts claimed that the Ashar virus preceded the Brain, but it was based on a code within it.

Before the computer networks were popular, viruses spread through removable storage devices, most commonly floppies. The traditional computer viruses appeared in the 80’s. With the increasingly popular use of the modem and the BBS, they were infecting commonly traded programs, shareware, even illicitly traded retail software. In the mid 90’s macro viruses became more common. They spread through Microsoft Office by infecting spreadsheets and documents. They also infected Macintosh computers, since Excel and Word were available for Mac OS as well.

The newest generation of viruses are called cross-site scripting viruses. They were academically demonstrated in 2005. They use cross-site scripting vulnerability (usually web applications, that allow code injection into the webpages) to spread. Even large sites were affected, like MySpace and Yahoo.

Protecting your computer against Malware

Refurbished Laptops and malicious software

There are many programs that pose a threat for your computer. Some of them just cause it to slow down, while others can even wipe out your hard drive. They are called Malware and they are designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. They can serve different purposes. Some of them are just written as an experiment or prank, while others are designed to vandalize, cause data loss, or engineered for a profit motive.

Adware: Also called advertising-supported software. It is a software which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising material to your machine after the program is installed on it or while the application is being used. It usually comes in a bundle with free software. Adware is usually created for covering the engineering cost of the software so the developer will be able to offer it for free. If your desired program has adware attached to it, don’t download it. You will able to find clean software alternatives that will do their job just as good. If you already have unwanted adware on your computer, there are programs that have been developed in order to detect, quarantine, and remove them. The most popular ones are: Ad-Adware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

Spyware: It is a computer software that is installed stealthily on your machine to intercept or take partial control over your interaction with the computer, whether you like it or not. They can collect personal information, interfere with your control of the computer, install software, redirect your web browsers, access unwanted websites, or change the computer settings. They are usually installed without you being aware. They do this by coming bundled with other software or by tricking you into installing them some other way. There are many programs that have been developed to remove or to block spyware, as well as various practices which reduce the chance of getting them on your computer. The popular ones are: AVG Anti-Spyware, Ad-Adware SE, PC Tools's Spyware Doctor, but there are several other ones that provide protection against these unwanted programs.

Viruses and Worms: Computer viruses are programs that can infect your computer and copy and modify themselves without you knowing it. They can spread from one machine to another when its host is taken to the uninfected computer, for instance by a user sending it over a network or the Internet, or by carrying it on a floppy, CD, USB drive, or on other removable storage devices. Worms can even spread themselves to other computers without needing to be transferred as a part of a host. All these programs can seriously damage your machine by changing important programs or setting, deleting files, formatting your hard drive, or even causing your computer to crash. Some of them seem harmless only displaying a message, but even these can give you a headache, since they might slow your system down, using important computing resources. There are several anti-virus software available for fighting against these malicious programs. The most popular ones are: Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee ViruScan, Avg Anti-Virus.

These malicious software are to be taken seriously. They can cause severe damage to your refurbished laptop. Make sure you use the best available programs to protect your machine against these unwanted intruders.

Taking care of your Laptop

Protecting and cleaning your Refurbished Laptop

Taking good care of your refurbished laptop is very important. If you clean it, and protect it well, you will be able to increase its life span and performance. And besides, you will always enjoy working with a neat, clean, well-functioning machine. Not to mention if you ever plan to sell your refurbished laptop, keeping it in good shape would raise its value, since people would pay more for something that is in great condition.

Cleaning your keyboard
The part that always gets the dirtiest is the keyboard. Even if you clean your hands before using your refurbished laptop, there is always dust, hairs and other unwanted particles that can contaminate your keyboard. First of all you have to clean the surface with a soft cloth and a light cleaner. (e.g. Simple Green, ArmorAll, Windex, or you can mix rubbing alcohol or dish soap with water) Wipe thoroughly the palmrest, tops and sides of all keys and buttons you can find on you keyboard. You don’t want to get your cloth too wet, otherwise the liquid might drip in between the keys, damaging the interior. After wiping the surface of the keyboard, it’s time to clean the spaces in between the keys. The best method to do that is with compressed air. Start with short blasts from one side and work your way across the keyboard. This will bring all the dust, hairs and other stuff out, before they can work their way down and damage your refurbished laptop. There still might be some unwanted visitors hiding under your keys. In this case try to remove your keys by popping them off of the keyboard, clean them, and pop them back on.

Cleaning your display
Your monitor is the most sensitive part of your machine when it comes to pollution. Even if you just barely touch it, your greasy fingerprint is going to stay there, affecting your view, until you clean it. Not to mention if you sneeze or spill liquid on it. This is why you have to clean your display on a regular basis. The best way to do it is using a mix of half isopropyl alcohol and half water. Use a clean, soft cloth and wipe off your display thoroughly. Don’t try to clean it with other household cleaners, or rubbing alcohol because they might damage your screen. If you do not want to mix your own cleaning solution you can always get special monitor cleaning fluids (e.g. PolaClear, PixelClean etc) or even a microfiber cleaning cloth.

Cleaning the inside of your laptop
Dust, and other particles can get inside your refurbished laptop through the keyboard and through other openings. They can slow your machine down or even damage your hardware. They can cause your laptop to overheat by clogging the fans, disabling the delivery of cool air inside the machine. You can get rid of them by using short blasts of compressed air inside. For that, first you have to remove the keyboard. Get information from the manufacturer on how to remove the keyboard. Make sure by removing it, you will not void the warranty (if there is any) on the machine. It is usually pretty easy: all you have to do is remove a few screws. After removing the keyboard use short blasts of compressed air to get rid of the unwanted visitors. Be careful with the hardware, the inside of the machine, especially the motherboard is very delicate. You can also blast some air in the opening of the ventilation system. This will get your fan to start spinning, getting rid of the dust caught inside. Maintaining your refurbished laptop this way, will give it a better performance and increased life span.

Cleaning the optical drive
It is also important to clean your CD or DVD drive. You can use the same method with compressed air or a Q-tip. When doing so, make sure you do not touch the little eye of the optical drive, the one responsible for reading the discs. It can cause serious damage to your hardware.

Protecting and cleaning your refurbished laptop is very important. It will help to make your computer run better and live longer. If you don’t mind spending a little money on the matter, you can get excellent laptop cleaning kits that will help you do your cleaning job more efficiently.

Laptop buying guide

Which is the best laptop for me?

Lot of people think they require a brand new laptop and want to buy the latest model. In many occasions a refurbished laptop is better, unless you want to use it for games or power demanding applications. Your connection speed is many times more important than the power of the Processor or the amount of Memory.
When thinking about purchasing a used laptop, first of all you have to decide what you want to use it for.

word processing
Requires minimal Processor power.

e-mail
Requires minimal Processor power and minimal amount of Memory. The connection speed is not important, only if you are transfering large sized files (eg. Pictures)

chat
It varies upon which chat program you want to use.
AOL AIM: Pentium II 200MHz Processor, 128 MB Memory, 20MB Hard drive space, Windows 2000, DirectX 9
MSN Live Messenger: Pentium II 233 MHZ Processor, 50MB Hard drive space, Windows XP, 800x600 Screen resolution
Google Talk: Minimum Windows 2000 operating system
Yahoo! Messenger v8: Pentium II 233 MHz, 128MB Memory, 30MB Hard drive space, Windows 98, Windows Media Player 7, DirectX
You have to look at your other Chat softwares for the System Requirements.

surfing the Web
Requires minimal Processor power, at least 64MB Memory. The internet connection speed is more important than the speed of the Processor. It also requires a 56K modem for dial-up, or an ethernet card for DSL or Cable Internet connection.

carrying it along
The majority of the laptops weigh around six pounds. If the weight matters for you, get the manufacturer’s precise information. Small, ultraportable laptops usually weigh under four pounds.

gaming
Simply check the Minimum System Requirements provided by the game’s manufacturer. Most games, especially the new ones, need a powerful Processor, lots of Memory and an advanced Graphics chip. However, many refurbished laptops offer top-notch performance, making them ideal for gaming applications.

music
For music, you don’t need to have powerful computing resources. The amount of your songs, you can store depends on the size of your Hard drive. The average size of a song is around 4-5 megabytes.

photos
The amount of photos you can store depends on your hard drive storage capacity. The size of a photo can vary from a few kilobytes to megabytes. If your store space is not enough you can always get a backup drive or burn your pictures on a CD. Be sure that the system requirements for the software you use to view your pictures don’t exceed your hardware capacity.

streaming video
Streaming is when you are trying view audio or video files directly from a webpage. It does not require top-notch performance. The system requirements are at least a 200 MHz Processor, 32 MB Memory, an internet browser, minimum a 56K modem, although DSL or Cable is recommended for faster connection. Most of the older laptops can support video and audio streaming.

on-line shopping
In the terms of system requirements this is very similar to browsing the internet. You need at least 128 MB Memory. The internet connection speed is more important than the Processor power. You need at least a 56K modem for dial-up, but DSL or Cable are way faster.

database applications
Older, simple database or Point Of Sale softwares do not need top Processor performance or a lot of Memory. Some of the newer programs or POS applications like Quickbooks, may need more powerful computing resources. Always check the System Requirements before purchasing a software or the refurbished laptop you want to run it on.

connecting to the internet
There are different ways you can connect your refurbished laptop to the web. The “old-fashioned” way is the dial-up. It requires a Modem (it is usually built in the computer, but in some older models it has to be purchased separately) and a Modem cable. The newer, broadband methods are DSL or Cable connections. They both require an Ethernet card (network card) and cable. These are usually built in as well, except for some older laptops; in which case you have to buy it separately. You can also connect your notebook to the Web via Wireless connection. For that you need to have a wireless card. (It is built-in in the newer computers, but for the older ones you might have to buy it separately.) Besides the right hardware all connection types require an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Check out the companies that provide service in your area. For around 30-40 dollars you can get a fast broadband service, but it depends completely on your physical location. While you can perform your basic web browsing and email applications with a simple dial-up connection, for some speed-demanding programs, games and downloading files it is highly recommended to go broadband.

operating system
Decide which platform you are comfortable using. Most popular ones are Windows 98, 2000, XP and Vista. Make sure the computer you plan on buying is capable of running the desired operating system. Some of the refurbished laptops do not come with an OS installed. In this case you will have to acquire one and install it yourself. This requires at least average computer skills

budget
You have to determine how much you are willing to spend. If your computing tasks don’t require the latest technology, you can find a good, solid refurbished laptop for even less than $3-400. If you have a higher budget, but still want to buy a refurbished notebook, you can find fast, powerful, (e.g. Core Duo, AMD Turion X2) computers for $6-700.

battery life
Some of the older machines have a shorter (1-2 hours) battery life. If that is not enough for you, you might want to consider buying a newer, refurbished laptop. If that is still not enough, you can always get an extra battery for extended productivity. Most of the serious laptop resellers have their own webpages for accessories.

warranty
While some refurbished laptops (especially the ones bought from private individuals on Ebay, Craigslist or by other methods.) do not have warranty, some used notebook resellers offer technical support and return options on their products.

parts
For most of the laptops, including the older models (especially the main brands) you can find all the necessary parts you might need. Even if some laptops are not being manufactured anymore, many companies still fabricate parts for them. These can be easily purchased on some of the reseller’s webpages.

brands and models
After determining what you want to use your refurbished laptop for, you have to select the actual model you want to purchase. If you want to use it as a desktop replacement, there are machines with larger screens and more comfortable keyboards, although these usually weigh a few pounds more. If you are often on the go, and want to carry your refurbished notebook along, you might want to take a look at the lighter models or even the ultraportables. Try to stick with the brand name manufacturers (IBM, Lenovo, Toshiba, Dell, Compaq, Hp, Sony, Gateway, Acer). They have high product support, manuals and information. They always have a toll free 800 number, where experienced customer service agents will answer all your questions.

where to find good refurbished laptops
Try to look on the search engines for product information. Go to you favorite one, www.google.com , www.yahoo.com , www.msn.com or to any other ones you might prefer, and simply search for these products. While sometimes you can find good deals on www.ebay.com, make sure you check the sellers ratings and customer feedbacks. The easiest way is to find a reliable and well-established laptop reseller, like www.USAnotebook.com , a company that has been in the business since 1988 and has sold tens of thousands of laptops in over 150 countries

For multimedia mavens on the go, the HP Pavilion tx1200 tablet PC is light enough to take anywhere and is a great resource for showing presentations thanks to its 180-degree swiveling 12.1-inch touchscreen display. Weighing just 4.2 pounds, the tx1200 delivers the same screen resolution and performance as a 15.4-inch notebook, but weighs over 2 pounds less. This stylish notebook introduces HP Imprint--a durable high gloss finish with an exclusive inlaid design that also incorporates touch-sensitive media controls for easy and quick access.

Protect your system and online accounts with your unique fingerprint for advanced security and peace of mind. The integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam (and integrated microphone) provides easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats. Optimized for mobile performance, it's powered by a blazing fast AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other features include a 160 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (max capacity), built-in quad-band Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g/N), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard slot, and NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 video/graphics card.

The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks. One of the headphone jacks is also compatible with SPDIF digital audio output for home theater surround sound.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
