Laptop sales have increased the last year. Some say it is because of Microsoft’s new platform the Windows Vista. When it came out, people welcomed it with mixed feelings. Some fell in love with the new, easy-to-use, user friendly platform right away, but some people criticized it for its high system requirements, high price, lack of drivers and for the bugs and flaws found within the new design. The History of the Computer Virus
The first virus was one called the Creeper. It was detected on ARPANET, the predecessor of the Internet back in the early 70’s. The first boot sector virus was created by him, infecting high school friends’ and local computer clubs’ machines. The infected machines would display a little poem on every 50th boot, but otherwise were caused no harm. The poem goes like:

The first virus for PC was one called “Brain”. It was developed by two brothers Amjad Farooq and Basit Alvi in Lahore, Pakistan, back in 1986. It was a boot sector virus and they used it to deter pirated software that they created. Later analysts claimed that the Ashar virus preceded the Brain, but it was based on a code within it.
Before the computer networks were popular, viruses spread through removable storage devices, most commonly floppies. The traditional computer viruses appeared in the 80’s. With the increasingly popular use of the modem and the BBS, they were infecting commonly traded programs, shareware, even illicitly traded retail software. In the mid 90’s macro viruses became more common. They spread through Microsoft Office by infecting spreadsheets and documents. They also infected Macintosh computers, since Excel and Word were available for Mac OS as well.
The newest generation of viruses are called cross-site scripting viruses. They were academically demonstrated in 2005. They use cross-site scripting vulnerability (usually web applications, that allow code injection into the webpages) to spread. Even large sites were affected, like MySpace and Yahoo.

(e.g. Simple Green, ArmorAll, Windex, or you can mix rubbing alcohol or dish soap with water) Wipe thoroughly the palmrest, tops and sides of all keys and buttons you can find on you keyboard. You don’t want to get your cloth too wet, otherwise the liquid might drip in between the keys, damaging the interior. After wiping the surface of the keyboard, it’s time to clean the spaces in between the keys. The best method to do that is with compressed air. Start with short blasts from one side and work your way across the keyboard. This will bring all the dust, hairs and other stuff out, before they can work their way down and damage your refurbished laptop. There still might be some unwanted visitors hiding under your keys. In this case try to remove your keys by popping them off of the keyboard, clean them, and pop them back on.
Cleaning your display
Your monitor is the most sensitive part of your machine when it comes to pollution. Even if you just barely touch it, your greasy fingerprint is going to stay there, affecting your view, until you clean it. Not to mention if you sneeze or spill liquid on it. This is why you have to clean your display on a regular basis. The best way to do it is using a mix of half isopropyl alcohol and half water. If you do not want to mix your own cleaning solution you can always get special monitor cleaning fluids (e.g. PolaClear, PixelClean etc) or even a microfiber cleaning cloth.
Cleaning the inside of your laptop
Dust, and other particles can get inside your refurbished laptop through the keyboard and through other openings. They can slow your machine down or even damage your hardware. They can cause your laptop to overheat by clogging the fans, disabling the delivery of cool air inside the machine. You can get rid of them by using short blasts of compressed air inside. For that, first you have to remove the keyboard. Get information from the manufacturer on how to remove the keyboard. Make sure by removing it, you will not void the warranty (if there is any) on the machine. It is usually pretty easy: all you have to do is remove a few screws. After removing the keyboard use short blasts of compressed air to get rid of the unwanted visitors. Be careful with the hardware, the inside of the machine, especially the motherboard is very delicate. You can also blast some air in the opening of the ventilation system. This will get your fan to start spinning, getting rid of the dust caught inside. Maintaining your refurbished laptop this way, will give it a better performance and increased life span.
Cleaning the optical drive
It is also important to clean your CD or DVD drive. You can use the same method with compressed air or a Q-tip. When doing so, make sure you do not touch the little eye of the optical drive, the one responsible for reading the discs. It can cause serious damage to your hardware.

They both require an Ethernet card (network card) and cable. These are usually built in as well, except for some older laptops; in which case you have to buy it separately. You can also connect your notebook to the Web via Wireless connection. For that you need to have a wireless card. (It is built-in in the newer computers, but for the older ones you might have to buy it separately.) Besides the right hardware all connection types require an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Check out the companies that provide service in your area. For around 30-40 dollars you can get a fast broadband service, but it depends completely on your physical location. While you can perform your basic web browsing and email applications with a simple dial-up connection, for some speed-demanding programs, games and downloading files it is highly recommended to go broadband.

Decide which platform you are comfortable using. Most popular ones are Windows 98, 2000, XP and Vista. Make sure the computer you plan on buying is capable of running the desired operating system. Some of the refurbished laptops do not come with an OS installed. In this case you will have to acquire one and install it yourself. This requires at least average computer skills

You have to determine how much you are willing to spend. If your computing tasks don’t require the latest technology, you can find a good, solid refurbished laptop for even less than $3-400. If you have a higher budget, but still want to buy a refurbished notebook, you can find fast, powerful, (e.g. Core Duo, AMD Turion X2) computers for $6-700.
battery life
Some of the older machines have a shorter (1-2 hours) battery life. If that is not enough for you, you might want to consider buying a newer, refurbished laptop. If that is still not enough, you can always get an extra battery for extended productivity. Most of the serious laptop resellers have their own webpages for accessories.
warranty
While some refurbished laptops (especially the ones bought from private individuals on Ebay, Craigslist or by other methods.) do not have warranty, some used notebook resellers offer technical support and return options on their products.
parts
For most of the laptops, including the older models (especially the main brands) you can find all the necessary parts you might need. Even if some laptops are not being manufactured anymore, many companies still fabricate parts for them. These can be easily purchased on some of the reseller’s webpages.

After determining what you want to use your refurbished laptop for, you have to select the actual model you want to purchase. If you want to use it as a desktop replacement, there are machines with larger screens and more comfortable keyboards, although these usually weigh a few pounds more. If you are often on the go, and want to carry your refurbished notebook along, you might want to take a look at the lighter models or even the ultraportables. Try to stick with the brand name manufacturers (IBM, Lenovo, Toshiba, Dell, Compaq, Hp, Sony, Gateway, Acer). They have high product support, manuals and information.
